About this Case:
TMLG has filed suit on behalf of Washington consumers against the for-profit debt collection company Bounceback, Inc. for violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (“FDCPA”) and the Washington Consumer Protection Act. Plaintiffs Wodena Cavnar, Rosaline Terrill, Linda Parks, and David Scott received letters from Defendant threatening them with criminal prosecution for debts arising from unpaid checks for small retail purchases. These notices bore the seal and letterhead of a county prosecutor, which was rented out to Defendant in exchange for a cut of the collection fees. Plaintiffs paid not only the check amount but more than $180 in fees to “avoid criminal conviction.”
The case was filed in July 2014. The parties have reached a settlement and notice has been sent to class members. The Court has scheduled a hearing to decide whether to approve the settlement for September 15, 2016. Class members will have until July 23, 2016 to opt out of this class action.
