KING 5’s feature segment, “Dairy farmers must supply neighbors clean water,” illuminates the historic ruling against mega-dairies for contaminating Yakima Valley’s groundwater.
TMLG represents the Community Association for Restoration of the Environment (CARE) and the Center for Food Safety (CFS) in the suits brought against several Washington dairies. Under consent decrees signed by the court, the dairies have agreed to make significant operational improvements that are designed to prevent contamination of land and water. These measures include installing impermeable liners in manure lagoons to prevent leakage and limiting manure applications to nearby fields. The dairies will be subject to more stringent monitoring by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and they will also provide clean drinking water to area residents.
